Groundhog Day!

WOW! 2010 already?

The Scots proverb says:
"If Candlemas Day is bright and clear,
There'll be two winters in the year."
Woke up to a rainy morning here in the Lower Mainland... wonder what the Groundhog predicted for us - I know VANOC is hoping he saw his shadow, we could definitely use some winter weather for the next 3 weeks or so - then you can bring on SPRING!

We haven't been doing much in our backyard since school started - but it has been a flurry of activity there!  Fundraisers, Christmas Hamper Drive, Movie Days, Spirit Days, Field Trips - the never ending fun for a parent that loves to be active with her kids' classes and the PAC!!
This month we have our 1st Annual Winter Carnival/Family Fun Fair coming up on the 11th, with a theme that celebrates the 100th Day of School as well as welcoming the world to our part of the world for the Winter Olympics.  It is going to be a BLAST and we can't wait to host all our friends and neighbours from the Aldergrove Community!

On February 8th the kids in all our local schools will be dressing up in red and lining up along Fraser Hwy to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay as it comes through town - talk about EXCITED!  A once in a lifetime opportunity!!

Back to School!!

WOW!
My baby boy spent his first full day at school today.  And he loved it!! My big girl is doing great too, Grade 2 this year - Oh my! Where has the time gone ?
They were so excited to be back to school and see their friends and so was I !! :)  I didn't realize how important to me that little bit of chatter with the other parents in the morning was... it was great to catch up with people.  Being involved with the kids' school is very important to me too - and I am looking forward to having more time to help out in the classrooms, and with the PAC.  Not loving the getting up early and making lunches thing tho' -LOL- I'm the worst for sticking with a routine, so I am having to really keep a tight reign on myself to get back into the old "good habits" and stop running on "Summer Holiday Time"

The fruits of my labour!!

After what was a fairly shaky start, my little garden is AMAZING!!I have already frozen up a bunch of oregano, dried tonnes of chives and garlic chives. The Italian parsley is bursting out of the pot!

We had a few casualties... the cilantro never really took, and the dill was wimpy at best - but I am so impressed with was has survived and thrived, seeing that I know NOTHING about gardening!!
My marigolds have just EXPLODED! and I even have a pretty purple petunia that has joined us, not sure how it got there as I did not plant any petunias...???
We have had lots of YUMMY cherry tomatoes, and the sweet banana pepper plant is incredible bountiful, unfortunately the bell pepper plant ended up in the shadow of my gargantuan tomato plant, and did not get many blossoms, the pepper we have had off is were so sweet and delicious though.

Summer fun!

Well... way too many weeks have passed since my last entry - I guess summer just has a way of doing that to you!! The kids and I headed up to Penticton in the early part of August to visit family and hang out for Peach Festival - it actually was a nice relaxing week!! Daddy got a little R&R too at home with the house all to himself!!
:)
We went for a swim in both Skaha Lake and Okanagan Lake, and played a couple of times at the really cool Playground and Spraypark at Skaha Our second visit to Okanagan Lake had to be cut short due to the accumulation of ash washing up on the beach from the Terrace Mtn. fire on the other side of Kelowna from us. The smoke blowing up the lake from the fire also caused the CAF Snowbirds Demonstration Team to have to cut their Wed show over Okanagan Lake way short! It also grounded us a couple of days to - limiting the amount of time we could spend outside when the smoke was really heavy in the air.
Saturday we took in the Peach Festival Parade down Main Street -- this is a time-honoured family tradition that goes wayyy back!!
We picked up 20lbs of YUMMY Red Haven Peaches on our way home and cut and froze most of them - the others we ate!! Mmmmm.... Peaches, the best part of Summer!

-they were coming out of the smoke that was blowing up the lake from the Terrace Mtn fire on the other side of Kelowna. Unfortunately the smoke was too much of a hazard and they had to ground them and cancel the rest of the show shortly after this pass.

August??? How did it get to be August already??

The last week has flown by... WOW! We are at half past summer already!

My daughter finished her summer program at school this week - she had a blast! I am so glad! But I am really happy it's over... What was I thinking -voluntarily getting up early and making school lunches for an extra 4 weeks!?!

The heat wave has kept us playing it pretty low key... a couple of trips to the water park to cool off, but mostly laying low... and looking for excuses to go anywhere air-conditioned!

My little garden has absolutely ERUPTED!! I am just waiting for my cherry tomatoes to ripen, I have a couple of sweet banana peppers almost ready for picking - I have harvested a BUNDLE of oregano, mint and spearmint, and the is plenty more where that came from... I just hope everything doesn't ripen while I am away this week-- I told hubby I would call him every night and remind him to water my plants!! :)

A busy, busy weekend ahead!! Starting off with the Aldergrove Fair Days Parade on Saturday morning!! The parade runs down Fraser Hwy from 273rd to 270th starting at 10AM -- should be fun!! The Aldergrove Fair Days festivities run all weekend with the fairgrounds opening on Friday evening and fireworks on Saturday night! So many events happening down there over the whole weekend - always good family fun! And I love that is it so close to home!!
